A popular food sold in stores around the country, including in South Carolina, was recalled over a potentially "serious" health risk.

Harvest NYC Inc. issued a recall of its 200g packages of Enoki Mushroom due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a recall notice shared April 18 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria that can cause listeria, leading to "serious and sometimes fatal infections" that can cause severe illness in high-risk groups like children, the elderly, those who are pregnant and persons with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.

The mushrooms, which were distributed by Hofood99 Inc. to retailers nationwide, are packaged in green plastic material with the UPC 6975730520101 featured on the back label.

Anyone who purchased the affected product between January 11 and January 31, 2025, is urged not to consume it and to either throw it out immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. As of April 16, there have been no illnesses reported in connection to the recall.

This latest recall follows a previous FDA notice about another popular vegetable recalled in South Carolina that posed a health risk for consumers.
